This August, Sibikwa Arts Centre in partnership with Lucky Dance Theatre presents an inclusive dance programme designed to spotlight the diverse experiences of vulnerable and marginalised bodies in contemporary society, including women, people with disabilities, and the LGBTI community. We aim to illuminate the various forms of systemic and personal violence faced by these groups, to celebrate their courage and resilience, and to explore structures of support needed to freely shape and express identities and live without fear. Through a series of powerful dance performances and workshops, this programme will create a space for dialogue, reflection, and advocacy.
The programme includes:
- Ladies in Heels dance workshop, facilitated by Khethokuhle M on 24 August at 3:30pm, Sibikwa Arts Centre Gazata venue. The entry fee is R100 at the door. Email communications@sibikwa.co.za to reserve your spot.

Bells and Sirens 2
Supported by the Global Disability Innovation Hub’s UK aid funded AT2030 programme
Choreography and Music by: Thapelo Kotlolo
Performers: Jabu Vilakazi, Keaoleboga Seodigeng
Description: A revised edition of Bells and Sirens commissioned by Sibikwa Arts Centre in 2023, this piece delves into the vibrant yet precarious world of queer club culture. It captures the sanctuary the club scene provides for young queer individuals, juxtaposed with the harsh realities they face outside this temporary refuge. Bells and Sirens 2 explores the tension between the freedom found in the club and the constraints imposed by societal norms.
As We Rise/#Me
Supported by the National Arts Council and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture
Choreography and Direction: Gaby Saranouffi
Rehearsal Direction: Teresa Phuti Mojela
Performed by: Lucky Dance Theatre Ensemble (6 female dancers)
Description: This contemporary dance piece, premiering at Sibikwa, confronts gender-based violence and advocates for women to uplift and support one another. Through powerful choreography and an emotive narrative, As We Rise/#Me explores themes of solidarity and empowerment.
In a society grappling with profound issues of safety, identity, and human rights, particularly with regard to vulnerable and marginalised bodies, this programme stands as a critical intervention. Showing the strength and creativity of individuals who defy societal constraints and embrace their identities despite adversity, the programme not only reflects on struggles and resilience but also inspires collective action and empathy.
Seeking to create an accessible and supportive environment for all participants and audience members, ensuring representation and involvement of diverse bodies, the workshops, performances and post-performance discussion are open to all individuals, with a particular focus on women, members of marginalised communities, allies, activists, and supporters of inclusive arts. Accessibility considerations will be prioritised to ensure participation from people with disabilities.
The programme seeks to transform the pain and struggle of marginalised bodies into a powerful statement of resilience and hope. By showcasing these stories through the art of dance, we aspire to foster empathy, to inspire change, and to promote a society that values and supports diversity and inclusion.
