Entrepreneurship, Culture and Democracy Projects Manager

Kelly Storom holds a Bachelor of Arts in Performance and Visual Arts from Wits University, specializing in Applied Drama and Theatre. Since graduating she has followed her passion for promoting the significance of the arts in society which has led her to work in different capacities within the industry in South Africa and abroad

Board of Directors

Sibikwa’s active, engaged and supportive Board of Directors significantly contributes to the success, sustainability, and impact of the centre, providing leadership, guidance, and support in areas of governance and oversight. In their different portfolios, based on their areas of expertise, they guide strategic thinking, planning and action with regard to compliance, financial management, fundraising and partnerships, marketing, risk management, impact monitoring and assessment, and various quality management systems. Continuously working on board development and recruitment to bring in diverse skills and perspectives, our Board promotes a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior. With years of experience, a passion for development, creativity and culture, and a commitment to our organisation, beneficiaries and partners, the Board serves as an expert panel of advisors and advocates.

Sipho Michael Mabena

Office Administrator

Is a vital part of Sibikwa Arts Centre as Office Administrator, IT support and general operations. Having been a learner, intern and employee at Sibikwa over the years, Sipho has grown to be a great archivist and source of information in the organisation. Mainintaing the link between Sibikwa, its partners, Board and stakeholders, Sipho has proven that reliability and consistency are the repair work of a true, trustful and trustworthy individual who sees the value of administration in creative industries. Sipho holds qualifications in Arts Administration and Performing Arts, that are accredited by CATHSSETA and previously MAPPSETA.

Smal Ndaba and Phyllis Klotz

Co-Founders and Consultants

Establishing Sibikwa as a creative refuge for young people to escape the socio-political conflicts of the tumultuous late 1980’s, Smal and Phyllis have long been seen for their significant contribution to the community and the sector, while building Sibikwa as a leading Centre of Excellence. The writers and directors of numerous seminal pieces of South African theatre, including ‘Wathint’ Abafazi…Wathint’ Imbokodo’, ‘Kwela Bafana’ and ‘Ilembe’; Smal and Phyllis’ work has toured the world, been published as set works, and performed in non-conventional spaces enabling access to theatre for all. Over the years, they have trained thousands of young leaners, mentored the development of numerous arts centres across South Africa, and created platforms for many emerging artists to launch their careers alongside acclaimed professionals who graced Sibikwa’s stage. Smal and Phyllis continue their life-long association with and support of Sibikwa in a consulting capacity and as non-executive members of the Board.

Thapelo Kotlolo

CATHSSETA Training Coordinator

Is a choreographer, director, facilitator and an assessor, who studied performing arts and facilitation at the Sibikwa Arts Centre. As one of Sibikwa’s outstanding alumni, Thapelo has graced both national and international festivals with works such as; ‘Shades’- Spring Loaded Festival; and ‘Men Don’t Talk’ – Museum of African Design as part of the ‘Dance Umbrella Festival’. Currently, Thapelo is a CATHSSETA accredited dance facilitator, assessor, project coordinator and an impermeable creative who is proof that, at Sibikwa, our work promotes professional growth of creatives under the shade of a tree of opportunities, planted a long time ago.

Ntombizivumile (Vumile) Qupe

Education Projects Manager

Is a project manager for Sibikwa’s educational programmes, including the Saturday Arts Academy (SAA), Inclusive Creative Arts Programme (ICAP) and newly established Adult Acting Classes (AAC). Having joined Sibikwa in 2015 as a music theory teacher she has since grown as a creative facilitator, assessor and projects and events manager. Vumile holds a National Diploma in light music (jazz) from Durban University Technology, and is an accredited CATHSSETA facilitators, with a certificate in curriculum development from UNISA. She is currently studying towards a qualification in moderation and facilitating learning in education.

Keabetswe (Kea) Galawe

Finance Administrator

Is responsible for the financial goals and key performance indicators of Sibikwa Arts Centre. Keabetswe provides financial administration support to Sibikwa’s various departments and oversees compliance with regard to Sibikwa’s financial partners and clients. Keabetswe oversees Sibikwa’s key accounting responsibilities, processing financial tasks, reviewing and reconciling financial records and drafting funder reports. She is indeed the glue that steers Sibikwa’s ethical financial practices, up-lifts staff accountability and up-holds Sibikwa’s sound management reputation. Keabetswe has a Diploma in Financial Accounting.

Napo Masheane

Artistic Director (AD)

Is a multi-award winning playwright, director, poet and acclaimed performer on both national and international stages. Napo is one of the leading South African black female theatre-makers, constantly crossing geographical, academic and artistic borders, through cultural exchanges, guest-lecturing, and with her provocative plays. A founding member of Feela Sistah! Spoken Word Collective and Village Gossip Productions and previously the Deputy Artistic Director at the South African State Theatre, with qualifications in Marketing Management, Speech & Drama and a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing.

Caryn Green

CEO

Is an advocate for democratising access to the arts, with over 15 years’ experience in the arts sector. She was appointed Business Arts Manager at Sibikwa in 2019, in preparation to take on the role of CEO. Prior to this she worked at Drama for Life, Wits University for 10 years, and sat on transformation and research committees. She was also an executive member of the Arterial Network committee. Caryn holds a Master’s Degree in Arts and Culture Management (Wits), and certificates in Project Management (Wits), Cultural Leadership (AAI), Monitoring, Evaluation and Curriculum Development (USA) and Bookkeeping (ICB).
