Sibikwa Sisters Launch

Sibikwa Arts Centre Honours the 1956 Women’s March with the launch of a vibrant young female ensemble, the Sibikwa Sisters (Imbeleko).

Join us for a multi-media launch of the Sibikwa Sisters (Imbeleko) – our vibrant new female ensemble – at the Sibikwa Arts Centre, Tuesday 9 August, 3pm.  Free Entry!

The Sibikwa Arts Centre has since its inception promoted women and gender equality in the arts, using performances, festivals and workshops to raise awareness of the role the arts can play in community development. Over its 34-year history, Sibikwa has produced a host of award winning plays dealing with gender specific issues, including the seminal piece of South African theatre Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ Imbokodo [You Strike a Woman You Strike a Rock], Chapter 2 Section 9, amongst others.

The Sibikwa Sisters is the realisation of the dream of founder Phyllis Klotz to have a full-time female performing arts company to address gender inclusivity and in particular South African black women’s realities. The 6 Sibikwa Sisters, consisting of 5 performers and 1 videographer, are founded on the principles of Chapter 2 [Bill of Rights] Section 9 [Equality Clause] of the South African Constitution enshrining the rights of all people, and affirming the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom.

Using contemporary multi-media approaches, the Sibikwa Sisters will focus on pertinent issues such as gender based violence, teenage pregnancy, abortion, transactional sex and HIV/AIDS. The ongoing tension between traditional culture and claims to gender equality, which underpin societal struggles, will be a starting point for the creation of their inter-active presentations, videos, discussions and social media campaigns, helping to build a cohesive, transformed and stable society.

On 9 August 2022, the Sibikwa Sisters will present a multi-media programme to introduce the ensemble to the general public.
