International Collaborations

1789

1789 is an ambitious international theatre collaboration between Sibikwa Arts Centre, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and Théâtre du Soleil, bringing a landmark work of French theatre to South African audiences. Originally created collectively by Théâtre du Soleil under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine, the production explores the French Revolution and the enduring struggle for liberty, equality and fraternity. The collaboration extended beyond the stage through École Nomade, an intensive two-week programme in which artists from Théâtre du Soleil shared their collective theatre-making methodologies with Southern African creatives. Together, the production and workshop created opportunities for artistic exchange, skills development and cross-cultural learning, demonstrating the value of international partnerships in strengthening local creative practice and expanding the possibilities of theatre-making.

You, Me & Democracy

You, Me & Democracy is a South Africa–Flanders collaboration that brings young artists together to explore democracy, identity, belonging and the ways people experience and shape shared public spaces. Through digital exchange, collaborative artistic processes and creative experimentation, the project creates opportunities for young people to engage with social questions, share perspectives across cultural contexts and imagine more inclusive communities. Combining artistic co-creation with digital tools and public engagement, the initiative demonstrates how the arts can make democratic participation tangible and accessible, encouraging young people to reflect on their role in society and the importance of creating spaces in which diverse voices can be heard.

The (Re)public of Culture

The (Re)public of Culture forms part of Africa–Europe Partnerships for Culture, funded by the European Union and implemented in Southern Africa by the Goethe-Institut, bringing together 9 artists across Southern Africa and the EU to explore heritage as a living source of creativity, identity and belonging. Guided by the themes of Memory, Multiplicity and Movement, artists and communities collaborate to bring Ekurhuleni stories and histories into view, reclaim authorship of their stories and imagine shared futures.
